About Peruvian Coffee Beans from Chanchamayo

In the Quechua language of the Peruvian Andes, "Minca" signifies a unique camaraderie among farmers. During non-harvest periods, neighbors come together, moving from farm to farm, collaborating on necessary tasks until everyone's needs are met. This spirit of collective care and social bond is what defines Minca.

The Central Highlands of Chanchamayo, located at elevations ranging from 1500 to 2400 meters above sea level, are part of the Junin region. The coffee from this area is renowned for its fruit-forward profile, featuring flavors of cacao nibs, roasted almonds, and fresh fruits like clementine and green apple. It boasts intense acidity, a creamy body, and excellent balance.

Organic Peruvian Coffee Beans

Peru stands out as a leading producer of fair trade and certified organic coffee, distinguishing its green coffee from the competitive exports of neighboring countries. In the 1990s, major brands began focusing on fair trade, ecological, and humane coffee sourcing. Seizing this opportunity, Peru invested heavily in organic certification.

The funds from the organic movement revitalized farms and infrastructure, expanding coffee cultivation from 163,000 hectares to 215,000 hectares by 2005. Today, 375,000 hectares are dedicated to coffee production, with over 90,000 hectares certified organic.

However, organic farming can be costly for farmers, involving a three-year transition period. It also leaves crops more susceptible to disease and pests.
